The Muskegon County Jail Inmate Roster is a public resource that allows anyone to check if a specific person is in custody. In the state of Michigan, such rosters are maintained by the county sheriff's office. MuskegonCourt.us helps find publicly available information about current and recently arrested individuals. Additionally, data can be obtained through the official Muskegon County Sheriff's website, by calling the jail, or by visiting the public information window in person. The roster is maintained by the Muskegon County Sheriff's Office; it is regularly updated and posted on the county sheriff's website.
Search Current Inmates in Muskegon Jail
There are several ways to find out if a person is being held in the Muskegon County Jail.
Online Search
- Go to MuskegonCourt.us to find publicly available court information related to county inmates.
- Visit the Muskegon County Sheriff's search page. Note: the inmate and police report search tool on the sheriff's site may be temporarily unavailable at times.
- If you know the person's full legal name, enter it in the search field. If there is a booking number, use it for more accurate results.
- When the inmate list is displayed without a search field, use the browser's "Find on page" feature (Ctrl+F or Cmd+F) for a quick search by last name.
Information about juvenile offenders is not displayed in the public roster.
By Phone

There is a public information window in the jail lobby where you can make inquiries about a specific inmate.

Find Muskegon Jail Booking Records Online
A booking record is created at the moment a detained person is officially processed into the jail. This process includes recording personal information, photographing, and fingerprinting. Here's what is typically included in a booking record:
- Unique booking number
- Date and time of admission to the facility
- Charges presented
- Name of the arresting agency (e.g., Muskegon Police Department or Sheriff's Office)
- Basic identification data of the detainee — name, date of birth, gender
Access to these records online can be obtained through the inmate roster on the sheriff's website. If the search tool is temporarily unavailable, submit a request for records directly to the Sheriff's Office Records at the address above.
For state-level criminal history checks, there is the ICHAT system, supported by the Michigan State Police. It shows public criminal records but does not replace specific jail data. If the person has already been transferred to a Michigan Department of Corrections facility, information can be found through the OTIS — Offender Tracking Information System.
Need a police report instead of a booking record? The Muskegon City Police accepts requests for report copies separately from the county sheriff.
Search the Muskegon Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number
The inmate roster supports two main search methods.
Search by Last Name
Enter the last name in the appropriate field. Adding the first name narrows the results, which is especially useful with common last names. A few tips:
- Check the spelling — even one extra letter can result in zero results.
- If the last name contains a hyphen or apostrophe, try the version without them.
- Some systems support partial search: entering the first few letters of the last name will show all matches.
Search by Booking Number
If you know the booking number, it provides the most accurate result — one person, one record. The booking number is usually provided during the first contact with the detainee or their attorney.
If the Search Yields No Results
- Ensure the name is entered correctly, without extra spaces.
- The person may have already been released — the roster only displays those in custody at the time of the request.
- There may be a few hours between the arrest and the record appearing in the system.
- Call the jail at 231-724-6351 and inquire directly.
- If the person has been transferred to a state correctional facility, check the OTIS system.
Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Muskegon
The Muskegon County inmate roster is updated periodically throughout the day, but this does not happen instantly. There may be a delay of one to several hours between the physical admission of a detainee to the facility and the appearance of their name in the online roster — depending on shift workload and data entry speed.
Main limitations to be aware of:
- Delay after booking. A recently detained person may not yet appear in the system. If the arrest occurred less than three to four hours ago, call the jail for confirmation.
- Record disappearance after release. The roster shows the current composition of inmates. After release, transfer, or posting bail, the record is typically removed from the public list.
- Not an archive. This tool does not store a history of all past bookings. To obtain old records, a written request must be submitted to the Sheriff's Office Records or use the county public records search.
- Technical availability. The sheriff's site sometimes reports that the search tool is temporarily down. In such cases, a phone call is the most reliable method.
For inquiries about records not included in the current roster, a request can be submitted under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). At the state level, the FOIA procedure for correctional facilities is described on the MDOC FOIA Process page. For county records, contact the Sheriff's Office directly at 25 W Walton Ave, Muskegon, MI 49440.
